Good stories from the streets, parks and stages of everyday Canada
Harbour & Maple Journal is an independent magazine from Victoria. We write warm, useful stories on neighbourhood life, music, film, museums and places worth a weekend, from every province.
A visual essay from across the country
Eight scenes from the places and people we write about, from market mornings to quiet coastal trails. Each caption names what the picture shows, so you can choose a story to follow.

A calm magazine for curious Canadian readers
The Journal began publishing only a few weeks ago, with a simple aim: stories that are pleasant to read today and still useful next year. Here is how the magazine is organized, and where a new reader might begin.
Five departments
Local Life covers neighbourhood projects and practical guides to everyday life. Canadian Personalities profiles musicians, actors, writers and makers through their public work. Places to Explore looks at parks, museums and coastlines worth a weekend. Arts & Events follows festivals, film and music, and Features offers longer reads on culture, history and craft. Each department draws on more than one province, so a reader in Halifax and one in Kelowna should both find something close to home.
Reading at your own pace
We publish about one article a day, and each piece is written to stand on its own. You do not need to follow a series or catch up on anything you missed. The Journal page gathers everything we have published, so you can browse by what suits your afternoon: a short guide to a local park, a profile of a favourite musician, or a longer feature to read slowly with a cup of tea beside you. Nothing here is written to alarm or rush you.
Who stands behind it
Margaret Hollis edits the Journal, with Daniel Tremblay on arts and events and contributors Priya Nair and Samuel Okafor covering places to explore and local life. Their working habits and the care they take with facts are set out on the Editorial Desk page. We also offer a few paid reader services, described with their prices on the Prices page, and you can write to us at any time through the contact form.
